1. Purpose
For my advocacy project, I want to create an educational pamphlet or poster including information about the Defense of Marriage Act and its current Supreme Court case. I plan to turn this form or poster in to you, along with evidence of where the poster or handouts have been. The purpose of the project is to solve and misunderstandings that the general public may have about DOMA, what it means for the country and what the possible outcomes may be. Also, I want to include information on how students can get involved in supporting the equality efforts. Through this advocacy project, I hope to show not only my support for equal rights but also the changing of ideas. When people become more educated, they are more willing to form their own arguments, express their beliefs and be more involved in the greater community.
2. Audience
My intended audience for the project is college students. I think they are the best audience choice not out of convenience but because those in this age bracket are ones who will change our country in the future. By providing information about the current case, those who do not have a current opinion on the definition of marriage can create one and stand up for what they believe in…. hopefully for equality and redefinition!
3. Medium
I’m not sure if I will make a pamphlet or a poster. It would be convenient to display the poster at the HUB during the advocacy fair. I could also make the poster and pamphlets in conjunction. I will hand out the pamphlets in the HUB.
4. Strategies
First off, logos will be most important considering it is an informational pamphlet. I will need to find reliable sources and site them in my project. Along with this, I should have websites available for people to continue to learn about the issue at hand. I also believe it will be important to have inviting or controversial images on the poster and pamphlets to engage the audience in the hub. Perhaps I can have some sort of banner asking passerbys ”What do you know about DOMA?”
5. Schedule
4/9 Make sure that my idea is good! Make sure I have a place to put my poster in the HUB.
4/11 Have all information for the poster (most of the information will overlap with the pamphlets)
Over that weekend: put the poster and pamphlets together. Make sure everything is cited correctly and that the images are appropriate.
4/16 have all final materials ready for presentation. Maybe have someone help me pass out the flyers or just have them available at the table.
